ESTES PARK - For most singer/songwriters the guitar part is secondary. The emphasis is on the lyrics and vocals. For Todd Corcoran, an interesting guitar part is just as vital to a great song.
It's been 10 years since Corcoran graduated from the University of Denver with a Master's in Classical Guitar Performance. Since then he's been hard at work developing a niche which aims at marrying his classical guitar skills with his songwriting roots.
“I've always loved writing songs,” says Corcoran. “But I also love the wealth of musical possibilities that goes hand and hand with the classical guitar.“
For Corcoran, the path from singer/songwriter and classical guitarist to a singer/songwriter that utilizes classical guitar techniques has had more than a few stumbles and setbacks. What started out as an ideal artistic concept, soon ran head-on into musical reality.
“It certainly was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be,” Corcoran recalled. “I could come up with and play an interesting guitar part. I could sing a decent line. But putting the two together just wasn't happening. The guitar would throw off the vocal or vice versa. For the kind of music I had envisioned, the only way I could keep everything straight was to write both parts out. Unfortunately, this took way more time and effort than I was accustomed to putting into writing a song.”
Staying true to his vision, however, Corcoran reluctantly began scoring all of his songs.
This whole process of scoring his songs and developing his envisioned niche style was slow and time consuming at first. But with his newest release completed, Welcome to CorkCoreRun, Corcoran feels like he's getting closer to his artistic destination.
