“Learning to play a guitar can be a bit of a wandering endeavor. Why? Because the secrets to playing a guitar are easy to take for granted.” This is what I read, 23 pages into The Guitarists' Secrets: Amusing stories and observations on how my former guitar teacher learned to play a guitar.
In The Guitarists' Secrets there aren't any chord charts. There aren't any scales. Throughout the book my former teacher guides the reader through his failures and successes in order to illustrate what the most important principles are for mastering the guitar. Principles like “We Can Only Play What We Know” and “Practicing and Playing are Different” may seem obvious, but they only seem obvious to the guitarists that take them for granted, which is exactly the point of The Guitarists' Secrets.
I took lessons with Todd Corcoran in Boulder, Colorado from 2007-2009. And I'll admit, I initially took his “secrets” for granted. But once I began incorporating the concepts into my daily practice, my guitar playing flourished.
For the serious guitarist interested in maximizing their potential, I highly recommend The Guitarists' Secrets.
